Wet snow and rain falls on the Malahat the morning of Dec. 16.

Snow falling on the Malahat early Monday (Dec. 16) prompted a reminder to “shift into winter” by the contractor responsible for maintaining road conditions on the mountain pass.

Wet snow mixed with rain prompted Emcon Services Inc. - South Island Division to have its salt trucks out monitoring road conditions.

While it didn’t stick to the roads, Emcon reminded drivers to slow down and drive to conditions.

Most of the roads in Vancouver Island's most heavily populated areas do not require winter tires (or chains), but are mandatory Oct. 1 to April 30 on Highway 1 in the Malahat Drive section, Highway 4 Highway 18, Highway 14, Highway 28 and Highway 19 north of Campbell River.
