6 arrested in Victoria after group blocks northbound lanes of Douglas Street downtown

Six people were arrested for mischief on Monday (Jan. 24) afternoon after a small group of demonstrators against old-growth logging blocked a lane of traffic in downtown Victoria.

The demonstration, organized by Save Old Growth, began around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Douglas and Johnson streets. Victoria police said several demonstrators blocked the northbound lane of Douglas Street, disrupting traffic in the process.

Save Old Growth said the event was its third local disruption this month, motivated by the group’s demands for an immediate end to all old-growth logging on Vancouver Island and within the province. Video posted by the group on Monday showed around 20 people involved in the demonstration blocking traffic.

The six arrested individuals were taken to VicPD cells before being released with conditions and a court date.
