Fourteen per cent of Canadians have admitted to intentionally accessing and streaming pirated movies and television shows, according to 2018 Canada Internet Factbook (CIRA). This figure jumps to 27 per cent among people aged 18 to 34.

Seven out of 10 respondents of those who admitted to piracy say they are willing to pay for readily available copyright-protected film or TV content online, if reasonably priced. The report though does not define what constitutes “reasonably priced” content.
Netflix Canada announced in November 2018 that its standard plan will now cost $3 more — or $13.99 a month. Netflix said at the time the higher prices are effective immediately for new subscribers, while existing users will be notified by email before their bills rise in the coming weeks.

The hike comes as Netflix faces growing competition from other streaming services, which also means that Canadians will have more opportunities to pirate streams.
