Attempted robber 'axed' by Victoria police after James Bay beer store hold-up

Man armed with an axe demands cash before fleeing empty-handed Wednesday night in Victoria

An axe-wielding, masked man gave employees at a James Bay liquor store a scare Wednesday night.

The man entered a cold beer and wine store in the 400-block of Simcoe St. demanding cash, but was spooked when he saw another patron and ran away empty-handed.

VicPD officers were quick to act, picking up a man matching the suspect description in the 2200-block of Douglas St. minutes later, said Const. Mike Russell.

A 19-year-old man of no fixed address is facing charges of armed robbery, disguise with intent and possession of a dangerous weapon.
