Cedar Hill Arts Centre to host annual youth exhibition

“Activism through Art,” an exhibition of youth arts at the Cedar Hill Arts Centre, is now open to applications from people aged 12 to 24

The Limelight Youth Art Experience is going back in time and they want young artists to come along, too.

“Activism through Art,” an exhibition of youth arts at the Cedar Hill Arts Centre, is now open to applications from people aged 12 to 24 who would like to experience displaying and selling their work.

The Limelight Youth Art Experience seeks submissions from artists who work in all mediums, including photography, paint, sculpture and film. Work will be adjudicated by a youth committee prior to acceptance.

“We celebrate art of all kinds,” said Jason Jones of Saanich community services. Intergenerational musical performances will also be a part of Limelight’s culminating event, The Youth Art Show set for March 3.

A key feature of the program is the free training and workshops artists receive in advance of the show to develop their craft.

“Finding the artists is a challenge,” Jones said. “They don’t know if they’re ready for a show, but we encourage everyone to apply.”

In keeping with the theme, a photo exhibition of John Lennon and Yoko Ono — shot by Victoria photographer Gerry Deiter during the couple’s 1969 Bed-in For Peace — will also be on display at the centre from Feb. 27 to March 12.
