Coroner's inquest finishes Friday

The results of a coroner's inquest into an in-custody death from 2009 are due Friday (March 25).

John Ian Rice was screaming and punching the air on St. Charles Street on July 12, 2009. Victoria police officers arrived, cuffing Rice for his own safety and the protection of bystanders. Within minutes, Rice stopped breathing and had no pulse. Officers performed CPR and used an external defibrillator, but couldn't revive him. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

A coroner's inquest is a formal court proceeding that allows for public presentation of all evidence relating to a death. A jury will make non-binding recommendations.

The inquest is being heard at Western Communities Provincial Court.
