Cougar prowling Wilkinson jail area

Saanich police are warning people in the Wilkinson Road area that a cougar is on the prowl.

Saanich police are warning people in the Wilkinson Road area that a cougar is on the prowl.

An alert guard at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre (Wilkinson Road jail) spotted the big cat at 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in the wooded area surrounding the facility. It entered the grounds from the direction of Interurban Road.

Saanich police attended the area, but were only able to observe the cougar from a recording on jail surveillance equipment. Police say they aren’t concerned about the cougar, but want residents to be aware.

The B.C. Conservation office was notified, but officers did not attend, as the area is normal habitat for the cougar.
