CRD board puts the brakes on alternative Malahat route

Board ask provinces to consider alternative safety measures, oppose watershed route

The Capital Regional District (CRD) board is not backing an alternative Malahat route through CRD lands for public use.

The board endorsed two resolutions Wednesday that oppose any new public highway infrastructure through CRD lands.

Instead, the board considered writing to the province about implementing measures that “address congestion, safety and emergency closures” without establishing an emergency route through the Greater Victoria Water Supply Area or through Sooke Hills Regional Park.

“The board has very carefully considered the motions that were brought forward,” said CRD board chair Colin Plant. “We heard clearly from residents on their concerns of an alternate route through these lands, but will continue to work through this process with our partners at the province.”

The board openly opposed highway infrastructure in these areas following concerns about drinking water protection, biological diversity and outdoor recreation.

The CRD was approached by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in the fall about the need for a South Island transportation plan and alternate route for the Malahat section of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Since then the CRD has continued to work with the ministry to evaluate and report options for the route.
