Crews repair damage after Tuesday night water main break in Langford

Flooding resulted in property damage, forced evacuation from Langford homes

A major water main break on Goldstream Avenue displaced a number of Langford residents Tuesday night.

A hole opened on Strathmore Road, by the Goldstream Avenue intersection, after an eight-inch line broke, causing significant flooding and forcing some residences to evacuate.

Emergency crews were called to the area at approximately 8 p.m. Eleven homes and one condo building were affected and lost water service for several hours.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) worked around the clock to repair the leak said Ed Davis, a foreman at Capital City Paving. His crew arrived approximately 8 a.m. Wednesday to pave over the road where the hole had surfaced.

One lane remained open in the section of Strathmore Road, between Scafe Road Goldstream Avenue, as Capital City Paving repaired the damaged road.

Davis noted the area flooded for approximately one hour before CRD emergency crews were able to shut off the water.

Assistant Fire Chief Lance Caven said BC Transit buses were called to take some of the residences forced to leave to the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Langford.

The City’s emergency social services team also helped some residents find places to stay.

When water service is restored, the CRD, in consultation with Island Health, has issued a boil water advisory for residents in the impacted area. The CRD predicted water service would be restored Wednesday.

The boil water advisory will be removed when Island Health is satisfied the drinking water does not pose a health concern. In the meantime, residents are asked to boil all household tap water vigorously for one minute.
