Cyclist without helmet thrown onto windshield in Victoria

Despite damage to bike, cyclist uninjured following accident

A cyclist on his way to work found himself on a windshield instead.

Pedalling through the Fort St. and Richmond Rd. intersection, James Kearluy was struck by a turning vehicle trying to turn left. Upon impact, Kearluy says he flew into drivers’ windshield before rolling off and landing on his feet. Despite not wearing a helmet, he was uninjured in the accident.

“Most the time people are pretty aware, but this lady wasn’t looking at all,” Kearluy said. “I yelled hey, pretty loud.”

According to Kearluy, the accident happened around 1 p.m, Dec. 10.

Kearluy’s bike suffered some minor damage, although he was able to wheel it away from the scence. The car that hit him was not so lucky. It needed to be towed due to severe damage to the windshield. An elderly woman was identified by both Kearluy and witnesses as the driver, and was later questioned by police on the scene. She was not physically harmed in the accident.

Kearluy lives in Vancouver, where he cycles everyday. He said he’s had some minor accidents involving cars, but nothing this serious before. He said he’s been in Victoria for about two weeks for work.
