The woman, a Saanich News delivery driver, was travelling southbound when she was forced to swerve to avoid a deer that ran onto the road directly into the path of the van.

A woman escaped serious injuries after rolling her van near Elk Lake early Friday morning to avoid hitting a deer that darted across the Pat Bay Highway.

Saaanich police were called to the highway around 5 a.m. near the Victoria City Rowing Club where they found a flipped van.

The woman, a Saanich News delivery driver, was travelling southbound when she was forced to swerve to avoid a deer that ran onto the road directly into the path of the van.

"The public is reminded to exercise caution while driving, especially when an animal is spotted at the roadside," said Sgt Jantzen. "Often other animals are present in the immediate area that may not be obvious to drivers."
