Drivers continue to illegally use cellphones

Victoria police officers positioned themselves in city intersections this week, looking out for speeders and distracted drivers.

Motorists aren’t playing along with the new cellphone rules, that will ding a driver $167 for getting caught talking or texting while driving, B.C. police say.

Province-wide, officers doled out 32,000 tickets for the violation in 2010.

Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary since the installation of the new regulations.

Between Nov. 1, 2010 and Jan. 31, 2011, VicPD officers issued 63 tickets to drivers caught using their cellphones on the road.
