Drug bust nets 200 pot plants

Saanich home targeted in joint police operation

Police hauled nearly 200 marijuana plans from a Saanich house on Friday in a grow-op bust.

The operation, conducted jointly by Victoria and Saanich police, used communications with B.C. Hydro, Health Canada and the municipality of Saanich to gather enough evidence to secure a search warrant.

Last Friday, officers entered a house in the 1500-block of Mortimer Street, near the University of Victoria, at about 6 p.m. No one was home at the time, but inside, they found almost 200 plants, along with three kilograms of dried marijuana, scales and other drug paraphenalia.

On Sunday, police arrested a 33-year-old Victoria man in the 800-block of Douglas Street, suspected of being connected to the bust.

Another man, a 26-year-old Saanich resident, turned himself in at VicPD’s headquarters on Caledonia Avenue at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Police are recommending charges of possession, trafficking and production of a controlled substance against both men.

Both were released from police custody and are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 3.
