Empty seat on Esquimalt council won't be filled

Esquimalt won't hold a byelection now that former Coun. Randall Garrison will serve as MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca.

There is no need to spend thousands of dollars for a byelection when a November municipal election is around the corner, said Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins.

"The cost outweighs the value at this point," she said.

Esquimalt council will also see a reduction in activity during the summer months when there is a four-week vacation. There are three meetings scheduled over July and August, compared to three or four meetings per month.

"As we get closer to an election, significant issues won't likely be brought forward," Desjardins added.

"We have enough councillors – six – to make decisions."
