Esquimalt looks for silver lining in sewage plant

Township to research ways it could use heat generated by sewage treatment plant

Esquimalt is making the best of a smelly situation.

The township hopes to use heat generated from a planned wastewater treatment facility at McLoughlin Point to heat municipal buildings and possibly the Archie Browning Sports Centre.

Staff issued a request for proposals Jan. 15 to find out how such a heat recovery process could be implemented and how much it would cost.

Esquimalt will spend $30,000 to carry out the research after it chooses a successful bidder.

In addition to heat recovery, the study will look at ways of reusing grey water, as well as biogas generation and the extraction of such elements as phosphorus.

The work will begin Feb. 1 and be completed by March 27.
