The former manager of the University of Victoria computer store will pay back more than $130,000 and has to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet, after receiving a conditional sentence this week on a charge of fraud over $5,000.

Earlier this month Kevin James Burns, 45, pleaded guilty to fraud after a Saanich police investigation in 2010 revealed that an estimated $150,000 had disappeared from the store between 2006 and 2009.

Burns’ sentence, handed down last week, includes a curfew between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., and requires him to be monitored electronically. He also must complete 200 hours of community service.

Additionally, Burns has to pay back $50,000 to the University of Victoria and $83,123.54 to Chubb Insurance Canada.

The concerns first came to light when a complaint was made to the university’s internal auditor, Andrew Cartwright.

“Through the different systems we have at UVic, we followed transactions to clarify whether there was substance to the concerns and the answer was yes.”
