Foundation work for new Johnson Street Bridge begins today

Several 42-tonne steel pipes will be secured in the Inner Harbour bedrock over the next three months

A 42-tonne steel pipe will be pounded into Inner Harbour bedrock over the next week as part of the new Johnson Street Bridge.

The pipe, also known as a caisson, is the first of 16 similar pipes required for the foundation of the future lifting mechanism for the new bridge. Work on the caissons is expected to run until February.

The city says the project is still on schedule for completion in late 2015.
