Several 42-tonne steel pipes will be secured in the Inner Harbour bedrock over the next three months

Workers in a small boat pull up to the construction area below the Johnson Street (Blue) bridge. The steel pipe (caisson) above them is the first of 16 that will form the foundation of the bascule pier (lifting part) on the new replacement bridge.

A 42-tonne steel pipe will be pounded into Inner Harbour bedrock over the next week as part of the new Johnson Street Bridge.

The pipe, also known as a caisson, is the first of 16 similar pipes required for the foundation of the future lifting mechanism for the new bridge. Work on the caissons is expected to run until February.

The city says the project is still on schedule for completion in late 2015.
