Gas leak near Esquimalt High quickly fixed

Residents now home after fire officials evacuate apartment buildings

A gas line was broken by a construction crew doing groundwork on Ellery Street, next to Esquimalt High,this morning.

The Esquimalt Fire Department was called at 8 a.m. and evacuated two apartment buildings, at 837 and 855 Ellery Street, with assistance from the Victoria Police Department and  Emergency Social Services. Due to the teachers’ strike, there were no students in Esquimalt High.

The gas line was repaired by 9:30 a.m. and residents were told they could return to their homes.
