Canada’s Governor General makes his first official visit to B.C.  Sept. 26 to 28, stopping first in Victoria.

The Right Honourable David Johnston and his wife Sharon Johnston will visit City Hall in the early afternoon Monday. The public is invited for a processional at 1 p.m. through Centennial Square including cultural performances.

Next, they travel to the First Peoples House at the University of Victoria. There they will meet with UVic President David Turpin, First Nations elders, educators and students involved in the LE,NONET project, created to increase post-secondary participation and graduation rates among Aboriginal people.

Then, at 3 p.m., they board HMCS Regina for a sail. The couple will also visit the Kinsol Trestle, along the Cowichan Valley Trail, and the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.

“We look forward to learning about the way of life in British Columbia, to understand the issues that matter most to its citizens, and how we can fuse the best of each province and territory to build a smarter and more caring nation for all,” said Johnston, in a statement.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that Her Majesty The Queen agreed to the appointment of David Johnston on July 8, 2010. He is Canada’s 28th Governor General and he replaced Michaëlle Jean.
