A house fire late Friday night claimed the life of a family dog, while occupants of the home managed to escape without injury.

A house fire late Friday night claimed the life of a family dog, while occupants of the home managed to escape without injury.

The fire began in the basement of a home in the 3300-block of Shelbourne St. around 11:55 p.m. By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread to the main floor of the home.

Two people inside the home were able to exit without injury. Fire crews rescued the family dog from inside, but attempts to resuscitate the animal were unsuccessful.

Damage to the home and contents is estimated at $300,000.

As of Monday, the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
