LED streetlight replacement project underway

Victoria has started replacing its old streetlights with new, energy efficient LED streetlights.

Victoria has started replacing its old streetlights with new, energy efficient LED streetlights.

The first phase of the project, expected to be completed near the end of the year, includes the replacement of streetlights on all city-owned, metal poles, followed by the replacement of all city-owned streetlights on BC Hydro-owned wooden poles.

City street lights currently consume 30 per cent of our municipal electricity and use. According to the city, the conversion from HPS to LED streetlights is expected to reduce streetlight energy use by 50 per cent.

LED lights also last longer, going 15 to 20 years without needing to be replaced, and the cost is now competitive with the current HPS lights.
