Man stabs himself after court hearing

At  3:15 p.m. Monday, Victoria police responded to a call about a man sitting on the sidewalk holding a knife to his stomach.

“Officers began speaking with the man,” said Sgt. Grant Hamilton. “While they were talking to him, he began to actually stab himself.”

To stop him, police deployed a conductive energy weapon, commonly known as a Taser. The man dropped the knife after stabbing himself two or three times in the abdomen with a 20-centimetre knife.

“Our officers then wrestled him to the ground,” said Hamilton. An ambulance transported the man to the Victoria General Hospital.

Police would not release the man’s name, but said the 51-year-old had been attending a hearing.
