Mobile home policy awaits first foray

Cheeke would not disclose how many homes in the park he has purchased to date.

Remaining residents of Shirlmae Trailer park in Langford will have to wait longer before their plight to stay is heard by council.

“I have purchased several trailers already,” said Ron Cheeke, the park’s owner. “We are in ongoing negotiations with of the remaining tenants.”

Cheeke would not disclose how many homes in the park he has purchased to date while he’s still in the process of working with other residents.

Cheeke, a Langford business owner, has applied for rezoning of the land for commercial use. Langford has a mobile home policy that requires him to meet several conditions to close the park including paying to dispose of homes that cannot be relocated and helping residents find new accommodation. In total the policy includes 10 stipulations a park owner must oblige.

“It hasn’t gone before planning and zoning (committee) nor council yet. Staff is working very hard to try and make the process work for both the park owners and its residents,” said Coun. Roger Wade.

Successful rezoning would mean residents get one-year notice to move.

Langford council has to approve the compensation offers given to the residents before rezoning could be granted.

The City of Langford has not selected a date for application to be before council because staff is waiting for Cheeke to file all of his applications, explained Matthew Baldwin, Langford’s director of planning.
