Off-duty Victoria cop does neighbourly duty in botched car theft

Suspect kicks out car window in incident on Dallas Road, faces assault, theft, mischief charges

There's no such thing as off-duty for a cop.

A Victoria police sergeant was at his Dallas Road home last night when he heard a sporadic car horn and decided to investigate.

When he looked outside, the officer saw two men wrestling in a nearby car, and recognized his neighbour as one of the men involved.

"Without a moment’s hesitation the sergeant jumped in and helped subdue the criminal," said Const. Mike Russell.

During the struggle, the suspect kicked out the window of the car, Russell said.

The VicPD officer and his neighbour eventually pinned the suspect on the ground until on-duty officers arrived.

A 30-year-old Vancouver man is facing charges of assault, trespassing at night, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000.
