On Saturday, Oct. 14, 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revoked Weinstein’s membership. The decision, reached Saturday in an emergency session, comes in the wake of recent reports by The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine that revealed sexual harassment and rape allegations against him going back decades.(Photo by Vince Bucci/Invision/AP, File) A panel that includes scholars from the University of Victoria will explore the meaning of feminism following widespread allegations of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape against powerful men like disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Panel featuring UVic scholars explores feminism

A panel discussion featuring academics from the University of Victoria will focus on what organizers call the F-word: feminism.

The third Women in Leadership panel discussion scheduled for Nov. 29 at Victoria’s St. Ann’s Academy explores what feminism means to women from different walks of life and the challenges they face in their respective roles.

“Feminism is for everybody who believes in equality and justice for all, ” said Kathy Sanford of UVic’s faculty of education, who will chair the panel. “Today’s world desperately needs strong feminist voices and perspectives to redress power imbalances and to change the world.”

Astrid Pérez Piñán, assistant professor at UVic’s school of public administration, and Val Napoleon, chair of Aboriginal justice and director of Indigenous law research unit at UVic, will join Stanford, as well Layla Robbie of West Coast LEAF (Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund) and Grade 11 Claremont student Jennifer Dayton on the panel, which the Society of Friends of St. Ann’s Academy (SFSAA) have sponsored.

Lifecycles Project Society will provide light refreshments made from fresh produce. Admission to the panel discussion is by donation.
