Neighbours concerned over lack Willows School consultations

Residents worry field will turn into a trailer park without input

Neighbours of Ecole Willows Elementary school are concerned about parking and green spaces after hearing about potential plans to add more portables.

Michael and Sue Yakubowich were disappointed they weren’t given prior notice of a presentation SD61 gave to the school community on Jan. 24 because they weren’t able to voice their concerns or ask questions.

“We don’t have parking, and there’s so many issues taking away school green spaces,” Michael Yakubowich said. “The community should be involved, especially next door neighbours.”

Yakubowich thinks there needs to be more communication with the broader community. He noted sites such as the old Richmond or Uplands schools could work better — even adding something into the Carnarvon Park updates.

“This isn’t a short term decision. Why knee-jerk when the money’s there when they should be planning for the future,” Yakubowich said. “Why are you taking away green space when you have viable schools and viable space? Kids should not be in portables, it’s just that simple. Making the school grounds into a trailer park is making an eyesore.”

The Yakubowich family spent 14 years with the Willows PAC while their children went through the local schools.
