POLICE BRIEFS: Two more collared for copper thefts

Two more people were arrested under suspicion of stealing copper wire.

Victoria police cuffed two people suspected of breaking into a construction site on Cecilia Avenue at 4 a.m. on March 3. They were in possession of copper wire.

Kelly Wijdenes, 45, and Sheldon Fox, 43, have been charged with theft.

Police say they have been working with metal scrappers, including Steel Pacific and Ellice Recycle, to identify copper thieves.

The copper is taken from construction sites, causing major damage, then sold to recyclers for profit. Copper sells for $4.40 per pound.

Death due to medical condition

Further tests on the body of a man who died at the Traveller’s Inn, 3025 Douglas St., revealed he died of a medical condition.

VicPD was called to a unit in the hotel on Jan. 19, 2010, where they found the 48-year-old man dead.

An initial autopsy was inconclusive.
