Police called after driver gets car towed from ditch

While the tow truck operator was working, the man who claimed to have been driving the car exhibited signs of being impaired.

Police are thanking an astute tow truck driver for reporting an impaired driver whose car was pulled from a ditch Saturday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., the tow truck was dispatched to the 4000-block of Locarno Ln. in Cadboro Bay where a small 2006 Chevy had wound up off the road.

While the tow truck operator was working, the man who claimed to have been driving the car exhibited signs of being impaired.

Saanich police were contacted and when they arrived on scene they found the man sitting in his idling car. The officer also noted signs of impairment, and the driver was brought back to police headquarters.

He was administered a breathalyzer test and his blood alcohol level was found to be three times the legal limit.

"This is very concerning. This was in the middle of the afternoon when the streets are busy," Sgt. Dean Jantzen said.

A 27-year-old Saanich man faces one count of impaired driving and had his licence suspended for 90 days.
