A section of the Trans-Canada Highway near Uptown has reopened after an incident resulted in a man being hospitalized early Friday morning.

In a news release, Saanich police officers responded to an injured man who needed medical attention in the 2000-block of the Trans Canada Highway around 3 a.m. on Sept. 3. Police said investigators learned there was an incident involving a weapon and the man’s injuries were considered serious. The man is currently receiving care at the hospital.

Saanich police are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to help identify the suspect. Officers are looking to talk to anyone who was in the area of the Trans Canada Highway, between the Uptown shopping centre and Tillicum Road, from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Anyone with information is asked to call Saanich police at 250-475-4321.

Police were on scene between Carey Road and Tillicum Road in the early hours of Friday after the incident forced them to close both the highway and the Galloping Goose Trail. By 7 a.m., police said southbound traffic in the area was being allowed through, but northbound remained closed while they investigated the scene.

Shortly before 10 a.m., BC Transit tweeted to say northbound traffic had also opened back up.

The Galloping Goose Trail remained closed as police officers and dogs were on scene as of 11 a.m.

Joel Brown, a Budget Rent a Car employee whose place of work is next to where the trail is closed off, said that when he got to work at 7 a.m. fire trucks and police were blocking off the roads.

“The fire department was here rinsing something off when I got here – obviously somebody got hurt and police are still here so it must be something serious,” said Brown.

Police say they’ll have an update on the nature of the incident later in the day.
