Prohibited driver apprehended while driving away from West Shore courthouse

Derek Fast was appearing in court for impaired driving and driving while prohibited

After appearing in court for driving while prohibited, a local man was apprehended by police as he attempted to drive away from the courthouse.

On Thursday (Nov. 22) the West Shore RCMP’s Bike Unit was conducting surveillance of property crime offenders in Colwood. At approximately 10 a.m. the officers observed a known chronic offender and Derek Ernest Fast, who is prohibited from driving, leave the Western Communities Courthouse.

Fast, 32, had just appeared in court, facing previous charges of driving while prohibited and impaired driving.

Officers witnessed Fast operating a vehicle, which he had parked down the road from the courthouse and arrested him again for driving while prohibited.

“The West Shore RCMP Bike Unit has a mandate to target chronic offenders and property crime in the West Shore area. This is another situation where the Bike Unit got their man. We will continue to use all of our resources to focus on criminals in our community,” said Cpl. Dave Vunic of the West Shore RCMP Bike Unit.

Fast appeared back in court Friday morning, charged with one new count of driving while prohibited. He was also wanted on several new warrants and was held in custody.
