No residents inside at the time, fire captain says

A fire sparked in an unoccupied Saanich home on Friday afternoon causing damage to the front end.

Emergency crews were called to a house fire in the 3100-block of Orillia Street between Maddock Avenue West and Burnside Road West around 2 p.m. on May 8.

More than 20 firefighters responded with several firetrucks and when they arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the front of the structure, said Capt. Capt. Jerry Tomljenovic of the Saanich Fire Department. Firefighters worked quickly to put out the fire and damage was contained to the front end of the home.

Firefighters conducted two searches of the home as there were vehicles parked in the driveway which typically indicates residents are home, he explained. Luckily, no one was home at the time but firefighters did get a pet cat out, Tomljenovic said.

Saanich police closed Orillia Street to traffic while the fire department worked on the home but had reopened part of the street by 3:30 p.m. Investigators remained on scene with three emergency vehicles blocking part of the street.
