Aboriginal art is coming to Saanich council chambers.
Council Monday will consider a notice of motion from Coun. Nathalie Chambers to include “sufficient funding” in the coming budget for the installation of a First Nations art piece representing the traditional territories in which Saanich lies.
The District of Saanich lies within the territories of Lekwungen speaking people of the Songhees, Esquimalt people, the Tsartlip Pauquachin, Tsawout, Tseycum and Malahat First Nations, according to the preamble.
The preamble of Chambers’ notice of motion identifies the initiative as part of on-going efforts towards improving relationships with neighbouring First Nations and a commitment to Truth and Reconciliation under the auspice of federal government.
Efforts to improve relationship with First Nations date back to early January 2016, when then-councillor, now-Mayor Fred Haynes brought forward the idea of acknowledging the Wsanec families of the Coast Salish Nation.
