The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is still in the process of selecting a service provider to operate a potential casino and entertainment facility in Victoria.

The operator/service provider will be responsible for finding a location and property within the City of Victoria for the casino. An “appropriate” location would consider access from major arterials, available square footage, available parking and must be approved by the BCLC, according to a statement from the corporation.

Once a design and proposal for the facility is complete, the city will need to seek community input on the project.

In July, the BCLC announced Victoria was selected over Saanich as the preferred municipality to host a second gaming facility in the region, an announcement Mayor Lisa Helps called “good news” for the city.

Shortly after, the city submitted a controversial expression of interest, in which the city identified Crystal Gardens and the adjance Apex site as potential sites for a casino that could generate roughly $1.8 to $2.5 million in revenue for the city.

Local governments that host a casino or gaming facility receive a 10 per cent share of the province’s net gaming income generated by the facility. In 2014, View Royal received more than $4 million in gaming revenue from its casino — money which was used to fund library services and other community programs.
