Sooke district councillors formally gave Coun. Megan McMath leave not to attend the June 27 council meeting.
Any council member who misses four consecutive meetings requires council to provide leave under the rules of the provincial Community Charter. Council also had the option to disqualify McMath from office.
McMath, in an email statement, said her absence was due to sickness and work
“I do my best to make every meeting and I email my thoughts to council prior to each, when I’m unable to attend,” said McMath, who is a 911 call taker and dispatcher for a variety of fire departments including Sooke’s.
McMath is a first-time councillor elected in 2018.
“It would be a shame at this stage of the game to disqualifier her,” Coun. Al Beddows said.
The next civic election is Oct. 15.
