Two boys, ages 15 and 16, could face charges of sexual assault after an incident involving two 13-year-old girls in Oak Bay.
Oak Bay and Saanich police are recommending charges against the two high school boys after allegations of sexual assault at an Oak Bay residence in late January.
"We expect to hear from Crown (counsel) in March," said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie. "Charges are pending and the court date is in early March."
The minors, both Victoria-area high school students, were released on condition that they avoid contact with the girls involved in the incident.
Eassie could not provide further details, but said the boys are not known to police. He said the case highlights the importance of educating those entering their teen years about engaging in sexual acts.
In Canada, age of consent follows a graduated guideline. Someone aged 12 can legally engage in consensual, sexual acts with those their own age or up to 14. Once 14, the legal age gap is five years.
"It's important for parents and others in the community to have those conversations with young people," Eassie added.
Saanich police is routinely called to aid Oak Bay police in special investigations.
