The Maple Leafs were the most talked-about Facebook topic in Canada in 2013

With the end of a seven-year playoff drought and an epic Game 7 collapse, the Maple Leafs were Canadians' most popular topic in 2013.

Canadians liked – and talked about – a few things especially intensely on Facebook in 2013.

As far as Facebook is concerned, the Toronto Maple Leafs were Canada’s newsmaker of the year for 2013.

That’s what the end of a seven-year playoff drought and an epic Game 7 collapse will do, of course.

Coming in second was the ‘Harlem Shake’, followed by ‘Miley Cyrus Twerk’ in third. (Read the full Top 10 at Facebook’s Stories website.)

From there, it was the Boston Marathon in fourth, then Rob Ford, Royal Baby Prince George, Justin Trudeau, Lance Armstrong, Pope Francis, and Chris Hadfield.

This photo shows the graph, taken from FacebookStories.com:

Facebook Canada Topics for 2013

In the United States, the Super Bowl came in first, followed by ‘Government Shutdown’ (2nd) and ‘Boston Marathon’ (3rd). From fourth to 10th, it went Syria Crisis, Harlem Shake, Pope Francis, George Zimmerman, Royal Baby, Nelson Mandela, and the Presidential Inauguration.

Globally, ‘Pope Francis’ was the most talked-about Facebook topic, followed by ‘Election’ (2nd) and ‘Royal Baby’ (3rd).

Only one Canadian venue placed in Facebook’s most popular ‘Check-Ins Around The World’, and that was Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, the home of the Vancouver Canucks.

So, at least our B.C. boys have that going for them, which is nice.
