Two Victoria cops and a sheriff battle 'distraught' man

Victoria man, 25, faces two charges of assault causing bodily harm in Jan. 27 incident on Burdett Avenue

It took two VicPD officers and a B.C. sheriff to subdue an aggressive man Monday night in downtown Victoria.

Officers were called to the 800-block of Burdett Avenue after a distraught man began requesting police presence. Police determined the man represented a danger to himself or others and attempted to apprehend him, said Const. Mike Russell.

"A struggle ensued with officers being punched to the ground and kicked as backup came on scene," Russell said.

An off-duty sheriff was leaving the Victoria Law Courts and jumped in to help subdue the man, he added.

Both officers were transported to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A 25-year-old Victoria man, who was also transported to hospital for medical assessment, faces two charges of assault causing bodily harm.
