UPDATE: Colquitz River Park shut down Sunday as police investigate suspicious death

A man and his son walking in Colquitz Park made a grisly discovery Sunday afternoon when they came across a dead body.

Police were called at 2:15 p.m. and responded to the scene within five minutes. Based on the initial observation of the officers, the death is being treated as suspicious.

Police are expected to remain on the scene throughout the night.

Detectives with Saanich’s major crime unit are working with forensic technicians, patrol division and canine officers on the case.

Colquitz Park, located next to the Tillicum mall shopping centre, is expected to remain closed into Monday. Police are advising the public to stay away from the park while the investigation is ongoing.

No details regarding the dead person’s age, sex, race or potential cause of death is being released at this time, police said.
