The City of Victoria's finance director resigned abruptly on Monday, just as the city looks to finalize the 2014 budget and its four-year financial plan.
City staff were notified of Warner's departure Monday afternoon in an email from city manager Jason Johnson.
Johnson thanked Warner for her contributions during her six years with the city and wished her the best in the future.
"We will take the opportunity to reflect on what is needed within the organization and what the organization needs in the future as we continue to strive for the highest standards of financial services and municipal budgeting," Johnson wrote.
Assistant finance director Susanne Thompson will assume Warner's position in the interim.
"We have great people behind Brenda who we're moving in to replace her," said Mayor Dean Fortin. "She's done a great job of making sure staff are developed. But we appreciate the work she's done and we know she'll do well wherever she lands."
City spokesperson Katie Hamilton said Warner has been offered a transition agreement "consistent with Ms. Warner’s tenure with the city and Canadian labour law practices in public sector organizations like ours."
City of Victoria policies dictate the details of personnel matters remain confidential.
Victoria is in the midst of collecting public input for its 2014-2018 financial plan, while council has given preliminary approval to the 2014 budget.
Warner most recently appeared before council at a governance and priorities meeting on April 10.
