With charitable needs at an all-time high in the region, Victoria’s HarbourCats partnered with Arbutus RV on New Year’s Day for their second annual food and glove drive.

The baseball team set up in the parking lot of Saanich’s Save-On-Foods to collect non-perishables, hygiene products, and cash donations for the Anawim Companion Society.

The non-profit organization provides support for people experiencing homelessness in Greater Victoria.

“We’re a day house for people living in poverty who want to change and find a better way of life,” said Terry Edison-Brown, executive director of the society. “We do this through a residential program and through a drop-in program that offers meals, laundry, and showers.”

Of greatest importance to Edison-Brown is getting to know these people to learn about why they’re on the streets.

“The best way to get to know someone is by breaking bread – it’s about coming together through community support to better understand and empathize with them,” he added.

Christian Stewart, assistant general manager of the HarbourCats, said that this effort began the new year on a positive note.

“The response has been really good and since we are a big sports team in town we feel it is our job to help give back to the community,” said Stewart.
