Victoria homeless need help to stay cool

A lack of access to clean water, even shade, puts homeless at risk

As the temperature continues to rise, Victoria’s homeless population needs help to cool down.

A lack of access to air conditioning, clean water, or even good shade means the homeless are especially vulnerable to heat stroke and severe dehydration, both of which can be fatal if untreated.

Prolonged sun exposure also increases the likelihood of developing serious sunburns and even skin cancer in the long term.

“This week, I’ve seen many people ill-equipped to fight the heat,” said Al Tysick, head of the Dandelion Society, a grassroots street ministry.

“As it gets hotter, you see the danger that extreme sun can have on people. Sunburns, heatstroke and dehydration are all serious concerns for the homeless population as they have no where to go while the temperatures go up. These dangers can all be prevented by providing simple supplies of water, sunscreen and sun hats.”
