VIDEO: Hidden camera captures Colwood thief in action

Man takes boots, helmet, personal belongings from Aldeane home

A hidden camera captured a man taking items from the front porch of a Colwood home last week.

Cora Ringheim posted the video to the Colwood Community Association Facebook group on Friday.

“This guy came onto our property, took our personal stuff including our 10-year-old’s bike helmet! It has been reported to RCMP,” she said.

Ringheim commented that her home is in the Aldeane neighbourhood.

Const. Nancy Saggar of the West Shore RCMP said it’s important to keep in mind that if something is valuable to you, it’s likely valuable to someone else.

“It’s going to be objects that are easy to flip – either sell online or go to a pawn shop,” she said.

When an incident, such as the one in Colwood, is reported Saggar said RCMP start by sharing the video internally to see if any local members can identify the individual. If that doesn’t work the video could be disseminated to police departments across the Capital Regional District or to Crime Stoppers.

If there is still no ID, the footage might be released to the public.

“In order to release something to the public it has to be a video or even a picture that is somewhat identifiable,” Saggar said. “Even if someone can say from their build or clothing – that’s not enough for us to go and make an arrest but that’s definitely enough for us to go and find that person and talk to them.”

Saggar recommends keeping items locked up if possible and taking down serial number for bikes and electronics, so they can be identified later.
