A vehicle fleeing police crashed into another vehicle at Government and John streets Monday afternoon. A foot chase ensued between the suspect and witnesses before Victoria police nabbed the View Royal minor.

A View Royal teen is facing hit-and-run and weapons charges after he fled from a collision and then threw a handgun over a fence while being pursued, according to witnesses.

Officers spotted a suspicious vehicle Monday around 3:30 p.m.  and ran the license plate before attempting to pull over the driver.

"The information came back with some irregularities so the officer attempted to stop the vehicle to investigate," said VicPD Const. Mike Russell.

The vehicle was pursued northbound on Blanshard Street then west on Hillside Avenue before hitting a vehicle at the corner of Government and John streets. The affected driver was uninjured, but the suspect fled the scene on foot.

"Numerous citizens, both on foot and in vehicles, pursued the suspect and he was eventually apprehended by citizens in the 2800-block of Rock Bay Ave.," Russell said.

Witnesses told police the man threw a handgun over a fence while fleeing; officers then retrieved the weapon.

The suspect is facing hit-and-run and possession of a restricted weapon charges.
