West Shore property taxes see big jump in 2019 CRD financial plan

More than 10 per cent jump for Langford, View Royal, Colwood compared to last year

West Shore homeowners can expect to see property tax rates get noticeably higher under the Capital Regional District’s 2019 financial plan.

Colwood homeowner will see a $37.22 rise on average in their CRD payments in the tax rate from last year –a 12 per cent jump.

View Royal homeowners can expect a 10.7 per cent increase to their CRD payments, which averages $42.56.

Langford will pay $365.22 to the CRD this year, an increase of 10.81 per cent or $35.62.

Highlands and Metchosin have an increase of 5.02 per cent and 5.5 per cent respectively. This brings service costs to $212.37 and $218.03, respectively, the lowest among West Shore municipalities.

Esquimalt property owners will see a notably significant rise in their rates, at 15.12 per cent, or a $62.57 rise, bringing their total costs to $476.44.

A big chunk of these increases are going toward a new wastewater treatment plan, accounting for the double-digit rise. Construction of the Core Area Wastewater Treatment Project makes up 78 per cent of CRD capital expenditures this year.
