An 87-year-old woman died Sunday near the Sooke Marine Boardwalk at Ed Macgregor Park during a family outing.

Emergency services were called to the 3700-block of West Coast Road at about 11 a.m. for a report of a woman in distress.

Witnesses said the woman fell in the water after stumbling on a ramp, said Sgt. Kevin Shaw of the Sooke RCMP.

Bystanders pulled the woman from the water and started life-saving efforts.

Sooke Fire Rescue firefighters continued those efforts until the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.

She died later.

The woman’s name was not released, but police confirmed she wasn’t a Sooke resident.

The B.C. Coroner Service is investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 250-642-5241.
