Woman admits to accidentally starting Dallas Road brush fire: Victoria Fire

Woman taken to hospital with burn to head suffered while trying to put out fire

Fire crews were called to Dallas Road around 1 p.m. Saturday after multiple reports of a beach fire.

The first crew arrived on scene, on the stretch of Dallas Road between Douglas Street and Cook Street, to find smoke and flames coming up the bank from the beach to the pathway above.

“[The pathway] is being well used by pedestrians on this beautiful day. So it was a chaotic scene with people pointing at the fire,” said Battalion Chief Doug Carey, Victoria Fire.

One woman was taken to hospital by ambulance with a burn to her head.

“She admitted to accidentally starting the fire and in her efforts to put the fire out she suffered a small burn on her head,” said Carey.

Witnesses reported seeing the woman smoking, however the Victoria Fire Department is not yet confirming what caused the fire.

“I will say though that right now with the recent dry February and so far March has been very dry, the vegetation on the bank is extremely dry and it’s like a tinder box so the smallest fire will spread up the bank if the wind conditions are just right,” said Carey.

About 900 sq. metres of the bank burned.

Carey is reminding people that it is illegal to have beach fires are not permitted on any beaches within the City of Victoria and people can be fined $350 for making or having a fire.
