Yates Street fire 'suspicious.'

Fire crews responded to a fire at abandon rooming house and found the front of the building on fire.

A fire at an abandoned rooming house on Yates St., is being called suspicious by officials.

Fire crews responded to a call at 1176 Yates St., minutes before midnight on Thursday. They found the front of the building on fire.

“There had been squatters there in the past and signs of activity,” said Fire Inspector Capt. Steve Meikle.

The property owner experienced a fire at another property he owns last year on Cook Street. They do not believe there was a connection “fire wise.”

The property was previously used as a rooming house but has been boarded up for more than 10 years, said  Meikle.

“The damage was exterior, no flames made it inside. Probably only 500 dollars in damage.”

VicPD is now investigating.
