Deafening bells don’t belong on cats

Would you wear a bell around your neck full-time?

Re: Birds, squirrels and cats – oh my! (Letters, Sept. 16)

Concerning Judy Whytock’s letter suggesting cats should have bells around their necks to reduce the kills of chickadees she raises. Cats have very acute hearing, much better than humans. Perhaps she could tie a large bell around her neck and see how long she could stand listening to it every time she moves. It is cruel and unnecessary.

I also love little chickadees. They have bird parents that are very capable of raising them, in the high branches of trees where cats can’t reach them.

There is no need to be that cruel to a cat – the bell will deafen them.
