Policing cyclists takes police on the street. Will voters next fall ensure that proper funding is provided?

There certainly are some jerks on bicycles. Many of them are well-equipped and fancily dressed — in cars I’d call that the Audi mentality (a noticeable psychographic group recently).

At the same time, we should recognize that the cost of dangerous cycling is not the same as from dangerous driving. In most cases the bicyclist hurts only themselves, albeit with B.C.’s medical system all of us pay for treatment of those who live. I’ve stopped caring about them but would rather not get blood on my vehicle.

More police on the street would also stop dangerous vehicle drivers. The value of frequent police presence was proven by a dramatic reduction in accidents on the Malahat a few years ago. Without frequent presence the jerks know they have little risk of being caught, so they continue to put others at risk for their own convenience and psychological jollies.
