LETTER: Speculation tax gives Tom Fletcher a chance to gripe

In answer to Tom Fletcher’s question “So, how many empty apartments go to hospital and school, or ride transit?” (Opinion, oakbaynews.com).

I would assume his thinking is if you are not here you shouldn’t have to pay for it, even though you might need it on occasion. That might seem fair in a resort community, which clearly Victoria is not.

As a permanent resident I don’t want to see my tax share increase because apartments that could be filled with full time residents who pay income tax to this province, sales tax and support local business year round don’t have a place to live. It just seems common sense.

This makes me wonder what Fletcher’s real point is here. Just another chance to snipe at a government whose policies he clearly doesn’t support?

It is not as if the last government did our citizens any favours when it comes to policies, or really, lack thereof regarding speculation in the real estate market.
